My name is Mrs. Henderson. This is the start of my nineteenth year at South Hamilton. I really enjoy teaching second grade and watching the tremendous growth and learning that happens throughout the year. I look forward to creating a great partnership with you to promote a positive learning environment for your second grader.
I have a 22-year old son named Luke and my daughter, Leah, is 17 and is in 12th grade. I also have a 3-year old daughter named Maycee.
I graduated from Iowa State with a degree in Elementary Education and received my Master’s Degree and Reading Specialist endorsement from Viterbo University. In my extra time, you will likely see me on my bike or walking or jogging around town. I also love to read and cheer on my kids in their activities and cheer on Iowa State too.
ROUTINES AND THINGS TO LOOK FOR:
TAKE HOME FOLDERS- This is a good way to keep papers organized and establish a good pattern. Please look for this nightly and send it back to school daily.
FOCUS WALL-Look for this sheet in their take-home folders on Mondays. This will have all of the skills that we are working on, along with our spelling list. We take spelling tests on Fridays and a little extra practice at home with words is a great help.
GREEN SHEETS-This will come home on Mondays and is not due until the end of the week. This is a summary of our story that students should read to you. This is for reading fluency so is helpful for students to read a few nights in a row. Also, ask your students questions about the story to see that they UNDERSTAND what they are reading. This is critical in your student becoming a good reader.
TAKE HOME BOOKS- I give a lot of credit to the first grade teachers for doing a great job of getting students in a regular routine of this. We will start taking books home nightly in the next week or two. I will give more information about that when the time comes.
CLASS WEBSITE- Please check this out to see things going on in our classroom. Students can read the story we are working on and practice spelling words on Spelling City, along with other activities posted weekly.
I am looking forward to helping your child make tremendous gains throughout this year. Please contact me if you need anything or if I can do something to help!
